- Lithuanian millennium song festival begins in Vilnius
The Lithuanian millennium song festival "Centuries' Glee" begins in Vilnius. Over 40,000 participants from the entire Lithuania and Lithuanians living abroad are to participate in the event which will last until July 6.
According to the data of the Lithuanian Folk Culture Center, which is organizing the Millennium Song Festival, this year about 42,000 participants are expected, 25,000 of them children and youth, over 1,000 Lithuanians from abroad from 16 countries and amateur art collectives of Lithuanian national minorities. 14 unique culture events are to take place in various areas in Vilnius over the week.
17 mass events have been held over the entire history of this major Lithuanian event since the first Song Festival, which took place in Lithuania in 1924. Emigrants' collectives have been participating in it since 1994. In 2003, the Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian song and dance festivals tradition was announced world oral and nonmaterial heritage masterpiece by UNESCO.
