2013 is a special year for Lithuania: for the first time, our country will have the opportunity to take over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Lithuania will work towards ensuring an effective work of the European Union (the EU) and the continuation of its activities, strengthening Lithuania’s position in the EU and promoting Lithuania’s, as a reliable EU member, image.
Following restoration of independence in 1990 Lithuania resolved to become a full member of the European community.
The Council is an institution of the European Union (EU) wherein representatives of the governments of the Member States sit. The main function of the Council of the EU is to initiate and adopt, together with the European Parliament, EU legal acts.
